MY BODY COLLAPSED in the forest as the burning sun stung my flesh. I licked my blistered lips, staring at the sky, begging death to swallow me. My eyes shut as a strong gust of wind swept through the tree branches.
“Follow the birds,” a voice shouted.
My body straightened. My eyes stalked the forest, blurry from dehydration, stinging from sweat running down my forehead. Their song crashed against my eardrum as they came into view, fluttering over the trees.
I mustered enough strength to follow, stampeding through the woods, falling to my knees as they hovered over the river.
