Dribble, Drabble, and Other Micro-Fictions

What's A Dribble?

I started writing drabble after finding out about them on The Fiction Writer’s Den and have been in love with them ever since. For those of you who don’t know, drabble is a story that’s exactly 100 words. So, what’s a dribble? A story that’s exactly 50 words.

I like trying new things so figured I’d give it a go.

Drowned

THE SUN STOPPED shining a few months ago. The moon refused to show her face as we gathered in the park. Under a dark sky we waited, wondering when the last star was going to fall. But it never did, instead the sky cracked open drowning any semblance of life.

Howl

MY SPLEEN SHATTERED. Time split in half as I laid on the floor, writhing in pain. My tendons twisted. Ribs cracked. I heard her voice outside the door screaming “Papa!”. Her cries faded away as her mother moved her to another room. My howl overshadowed the clicking of the deadbolt.
I came across a post on Daily Writing Tips titled “A Drabble, A Dribble — Short Fiction By Any Name”, where they had a few word count charts listed. One in particular caught my eye.

  • Half a dribble = 25 words
  • Dribble = 50 words
  • Drabble = 100 words
  • Drabble and a half = 150 words
  • Double drabble = 200 words
I’ll probably try my hand at a few more dribble and keep writing drabble.
